Scott Bieler Clinical Sciences Center - Buffalo, NY

Congratulations to the Scott Bieler Clinical Sciences Center in Buffalo, New York winner of the 2018 Urban Land Institute New York Award for Excellence in Institutional Development. In 2014, Building America CDE provided $9.2 million of New Markets Tax Credits (NMTCs) for the project’s construction—financing included a total of $21.3 million in NMTCs provided by three other Community Development Entities, donations, and sponsor equity. The Clinical Sciences Center, part of the Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, opened in 2016 and has significantly increased access to medical treatment, cancer prevention services, mammography, and high-risk population screenings in the Buffalo community.

Designed by FX Collaborative (architects of the Condé Nast Building, Reuters Building, and Eleven Times Square) the 11-story facility connects to the main hospital and an existing research facility, forming an interconnected three-dimensional composition. This will be the third award recognizing the design of the Clinical Sciences Center, which has also received the Society of American Registered Architects’ National Design Award and the American Institute of Architects-Buffalo’s Design Award.

The ULI Awards for Excellence, “recognize outstanding development projects in the private, public, and nonprofit sectors across New York State that best exemplify ULI’s commitment to responsible land use and creating sustainable, thriving communities.” Past winners of ULI Awards for Excellence have included the East Harlem Center for Living and Learning (Jonathan Rose Companies), The Delaware North Building (Uniland Development Company), The Kathleen Grimm School for Leadership and Sustainability at Sandy Ground (New York City School Construction Authority), and The Hills on Governors Island (The Trust for Governors Island).

In 2016, the Excellence in Institutional Development Award was awarded to the National September 11 Museum & Memorial.
