Renaissance Village

Building America CDE is proud to announce its support of Renaissance Village, the first new multi-story building in Welch, WV in over 50 years. Welch is a severely distressed rural area in McDowell County that has suffered decades of economic and social challenges brought on by the collapse of the local coal industry. The American Federation of Teachers sponsored this project and Building America, a subsidiary of AFL-CIO Housing Investment Trust, allocated $9.0 million in New Markets Tax Credits as project finance. The resulting mixed-use facility will provide new housing, including units affordable to local teachers, community-serving retail space, and medical offices. Renaissance Village is an example of how large organizations can work alongside community groups, like Reconnecting McDowell, to successfully address critical local needs.
